Every day I learn a little something new about event design and the different components that make it.....well....a production.
Since I had been leanging towards an event at the Trolley Barn, I decided I wanted to check out an Atlanta lighting design company that could do lighting.
I just wanted to get a ball park and thus bench mark.
After searching through a few very LARGE (re: expensive) companies like Magnum Lighting, I found a company to give me a quote.
He came back with $2,000.00 for lighting the perimeter with violet uplighting, spotlighting/pin lighting on all centerpieces, custom gobo for dance floor (monogram), and leaf pattern to put on the dance floor/walls as well.
From what I can tell, that's actually a pretty good deal, but alas it is WAYYYY out of my budget.
Goodness, who knew that lights could cost so much. However, I must say that I do appreciate the ambiance that lighting lends to a reception and if I had more money, that would be the first place it would go to. So, just some more random wedding information I can add to my already exploding head. WOO!

The Trolley Barn....Al's first look
Sunday, March 23, 2008
Yesterday after we left the Easter service at the Shrine, I suggested to Al that we go and take a look at the Trolley Barn. This would be his first glance.
The venue was locked, but we were able to look at the patio and look in through the windows to get a general overview of the space.
There had been a wedding there the night before and the draping was still in place.
I was so glad to get to see an example of it instead of just having to envision it in my head.
All the drapery was white, but it gave me the idea of using uplights.
I was thinking of perhaps doing a lavendar uplighting by each of the 3 windows on the non-door side as well as 3 or 4 lining the back wall to give a nice backdrop.
I'm gonna have to chat with Lara to see what she thinks is possible.
We also talked about the chairs and how we just couldn't justify the additional $1,000.00 expense. I think we'll stick with the white plastic folding and do a colored chair cover (NO WHITE).
Al seemed to liked the space (from what he saw). For us the only two cons about this place are the chairs and the parking. I don't think the parking is really that bad at all. There's plenty of space on the street, in the little lot, and across the street, so guests won't have to really walk that far.
Everything else about it completley works out....well, except the rules about no sparklers or bubbles, so I think we have to figure out what to use for a send off.
Can't wait to put the deposit down on the venue.
Then it will be done.

The Journey of the Ring....Part 3
Saturday, March 22, 2008
So after Scott and Alden's wedding, we took the long trek up to Rubin Bros. again to take a picture of my grandmother's ring before it gotten taken apart. I totally had forgotten to take a picture of me wearing it prior to handing it over.
When we got there we were able to take a few photos and then we got to talk to Josh about how he actually creates a 3D rendering of the ring and how he can customize it from there. He also showed us the process of creating the cast out of wax. Such an interesting procedure.....who knew?
Josh assured us that he would work on the rendering immediately and have it done within 2 business days. I can't wait to see it and customize it.
YAY!!!!!
When we got home, I had received in the mail 2 wedding DVD demos from Moonrize Studios, so we were able to view some of the video. Overall I was pleased with what I saw and Moonrize is definitely in the running to be our videography vendor.

Second Mama cries.....so cute
March 19, 2008
So, I have this second mother, Allyson, who has been going through this whole wedding planning process with me. She's known me for quite some time and in her words is watching me blossom like a flower.
I'm always excited to tell her about my plans and how things are going.
Tonight I was telling her about my great plan of having the Ramblin' Wreck take us from the ceremony to the reception and how my vision includes guests lining the church steps, waving white and gold pom poms and cheering us on as we leave the church.
Allyson gets all emotional and does the happy cry. She says I'm all grown up.
It's nice to be able to talk to someone about where I've come from and where I am.
I never imagined I would be in this place (Allyson said she knew I would) and I really feel blessed to have those special people in my life who have made it a possibility.

Adding Housing to the Wedding List
March 16, 2008
After Carol left, we went back to chat with Scott and Alden and the idea of us buying their house was put on the table. This would be as close to the most perfect option for us as possible. The only thing missing is a garage.
At this point, we're just talking about things, but I'm SOOOOOO excited about the possibility of buying a new home that will allow us to grow and start a family.
YAY!!!!!
Paying my first Wedding Deposit (and the calm after the storm)
Saturday, March 15, 2008
After we left the Trolley Barn, mom and I had lunch in Decatur at Little Azios. We had a chance to sit down and kind of process everything thus far. It's been such a huge day filled with so much information, that I'm glad I had her as a sounding board to discuss all the options available.
I'm so excited to continue on this journey and go through this process. Today felt like a huge productive success.
Happy Anniversary Lindsay and Phil!!!!!
Today we had an appointment to go and visit the church (The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception) and for Mom to meet the wedding planner.
Al and I were watching basketball Friday night (Georgia was playing at the dome), when all of a sudden you could hear/see through the tv, the rafters begin to shake and people generally freak out. It was so bizarre as we had previously been admiring the lighting show outside before the tornado hit downtown.
Today as we drove through the heart of the damage, you could see the clear path that the tornado took. The lofts over near the cemetery suffered incredible damage and half of the building ended up with a collapsed roof. There was debris strewn throughout the streets as we navigated carefully through to get to the church.
When we got to the church, we met up with Lara and then were given a tour by Jerry Bryant.
Mom was so taken with the beauty of the church and for me it was so awesome to see the church from the other side and not during a service.
I was struck at the sheer beauty of the church and then it really hit me.......I'm really doing this. I'm going to promise myself to Al in front of God. I really had to take moment to just take it all in and catch my breath. I never EVER imagined that I would be here, and I'm SO grateful that I am.

With Al's consent we decided to commit to our June 6, 2008 date for the 2:00 pm time slot. We took the first step and put down......the first wedding deposit.
To be honest, I was shocked about the amount of money required to marry in the church, but this is definitely a must have for both of us and in the end, we would have paid almost anything.
I'm so excited.....the first step to truly making things real....(and no, I don't have the ring yet). i was so overcome with emotions, that I actually started to cry (and so did Mom - I know, shocking right?)
After we left the church, we headed to our next appointment which was Linda at the Trolley Barn near Edgewood Avenue. We are considering this location as a venue for our reception. One of the best "pro's" of this place is its close proximity to the church. However, with a large gap between the ceremony and reception, I'm not so sure that it's needed.
I really do love the space, specifically the ability to bring in my own caterer and alcohol, but my one hang up that continues to nag me is the way to transform/decorate the space. I think that it's a great place, but will take WAYYYY to much money to make something out of. Basically, the whole place needs to be draped......I just don't know.
I really love the outdoor space, the bricked patio, and the options for pictures. I can definitely see my reception taking place here.

Lethal Rhythms
March 11, 2008
However, I ended up getting a call from Joel Rabbe of Lethal Rhythms. He called to confirm our meeting that day, which he had mistakenly moved up a day. But since my other meeting had fallen through, I figured, what the heck. I'll make the most out of my time out of the office.
We decided to have our initial consultation at chi-fil-a to chat about my event and what he could do to make the party special.
We decided to have our initial consultation at chi-fil-a to chat about my event and what he could do to make the party special.
I was pretty impressed by Joel and he assured me that my event would be in good hands and that he would be able create/host/make a rockin party for us.
Joel had a great speech and really great ideas. He also had this massive book filled with testimonials...which was just a little over the top, but whatever. The only thing that bugged me about Joel was the arrogance that creeped in everyonce in awhile. That sense that it would be completely nuts for me to even consider any other vendor. Which.....in fairness, I get. As a vendor, you have to sell yourself to get the sale. I get that....but part of me just felt like it was so insincere at times and unfortunately, I don't think our personalities completely clicked.....
In addition, with the price tag of $1695 for four hours of music, I just couldn't justify booking him for my wedding.
Back to the drawing board and another let down of vendor rec.'s. Oh well...
In Style Events
March 10, 2008
We met today at Caribou coffee for our initial consultation. I didn't feel like our personalities clicked and I didn't get the sense from her that she could handle a super chaotic environment. She seemed very sweet and actually brought me a gift (a set of scented tea lights). However, in all of her brochures and pamphlets there were countless spelling and grammar errors, to the point of where I couldn't understand what she was trying to convey. Now, I know this sounds super harsh and VERY snobby/picky, but part of me is kind of like, as a professional, you should really have someone proofread your business material that you give out to clients.
Her prices seemed pretty standard as to what is being charged by competitors, so to be honest there was nothing that really stood out about this company.
Regardless, I chose not to hire In Style Events to coordinate my wedding.
Atlanta Event and Design
March 7, 2008
Although I had spoken with Lara at Cameo Events first and planned to meet on Friday, I decided to go ahead and meet with Kaye from Atlanta Event and Design today because she was available
I met with Kaye for lunch at Chick-fil a and she bought me lunch which was very sweet. At first I got along quite well with her and we were brainstorming and going over ideas together. Then came the money part. All of a sudden I was strong armed into going with a full service package with her when I knew that all I wanted to month of coordinator. She claimed it was all or day of for her services. She charged a flat rate of $2,000.00 + 10 -15% of the overall budget over $20,000.00. Confusing right?
After we started talking she basically acted as if I had booked her already and started speaking as if I was already her client. I realized that our styles clashed and I would need someone who was a little less Newnan Georgia style. Of course this is just my opinion and perspective.
Needless to say I chose NOT to hire Kaye.

Wedding Mania (Finding the Ring)
Saturday, March 1, 2008
Wow, I can't believe today just happened! I'm on cloud nine and so totally happy, that I don't know what to do with myself.
Al took me ring shopping at Rubin Brothers in order to check out what they had available for engagement rings. Unbeknownst to me, Al had already been to the store, established a budget and had an idea of what I wanted.
He basically "unleashed" me in the store to find something that I really liked in order to get a starting point. I was drawn to the House of Taylor collection [apparently that Elizabeth Taylor has good taste in diamonds ;) ]. Al actually found the ring and suggested I try it on. I swear to you that I could not take that ring off of my finger. I was awestruck (and probably drooling). The piece was so beautiful and I just kept staring at my hand. A fellow shopper actually came up to me and said "wow, that ring is AMAZING!, you're a lucky girl". I was sold. One of the owner's, Mitch, who helped us kept trying to show me other pieces, but I just kept coming back to my ring. The others were almost perfect but not quite, but mine was absolutely perfect for me. I'm a little ashamed to say that I fell prey to the power of diamonds, but as Mitch said, "this is important....this is your forever ring". I had found my second love. What was even more shocking was when we sat down, Mitch quoted us a price, and Al said "we'll take it". I think I nearly swallowed my tongue. I couldn't believe this was happening. I was so sure that I would still be on the search in order to find something that would be just what I wanted, but much more budget friendly as I had previously encountered at the Shane Company. And yet, here we were, sizing my ring finger and Al putting down a deposit. I was literally in this fuzzy trance, where everything goes a little bit in slow motion and volume is turned down super low. I was snapped out of my trance by Al's big smile. I think he was amused by my reaction.
I can't believe we just picked out my engagement ring.

Afterwards we had a quick lunch at Fudruckers before heading down to the Villa Christina for a wedding show. I took Al on a quick tour of Villa Christina to show him the location as a possibility for a reception venue. I've kinda been in love with this venue for a while as it is so picturesque and beautiful. It turned out that the bridal show was in another building in the complex, so we ended up walking across the street. I had no idea what it would be like and imagine my surprise to find that it was a wedding dress trunk show for Savvi formal wear (who are normally known for their tuxes). So......I freakin tried on a WEDDING DRESS in front of Al!!!!! I couldn't believe that he was just going with the flow, not freaking out and actually enjoying himself at this impromptu fashion show.
There were also a few Vendor's there including Charles for Spectrum Entertainment and Sabrina with Bliss mobile spa. They were doing a free hair and makeup trial, so I got my hair and makeup done.....wow! Al was so patient and completely let me have my moments of glory. All this while missing basketball. I was impressed.

We ended up taking a bit too long at the bridal show, so instead of going home, we ended up going straight to the Band alumni dinner at Scalini's. I'm really enjoying attending these events and hanging out with the band folks. We always have a good time, but this year the place was overrun with babies....holy crap it was a zoo. Still it's always nice to have good Italian food, garlic rolls of death and good wine.
After dinner a small group walked over to Bruster's for an icecream night cap.
What a great ending to such an amazing day!
I can't even begin to express how happy I am....this is definitely something I could get used to.

Roll out the Red Carpet at the Fox
Februry 24, 2008
Well, I finally got to a different wedding/bridal show other than the Great Bridal Expo. This one was held by Chic Occasions at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.
It was actually a very pleasant experience.
The show was free and I only had to pay $5 to park. Which was an added bonus.
When I got there, a line had formed, so I lined up, checked in and was given a tiara to wear to identify me as abride. Way cute.
The show held in the Egyptian ballroom and the grand salon and there were quite a few really great vendors there. They had music playing, cake samples, pretty much any vendor you could think of was there.
I managed to snag a seat pretty close to the front for the fashion show which turned out to be just ok. It was cool to see the different dresses, though the models didn't seem like they had a clue what they were doing. It was cool to see bridal dresses, bridesmaid's dresses, flower girl dresses and tuxxes. At the end of the show, the models through their bouquets into the audience for prizes. I haven't seen women go crazy like that in a while. Kinda scary. I mean, I love a good deal, prize, free stuff....etc. But goodness......
Overall I had a really great experience, met some good vendors, did a little bit of networking and took home some goodies.

My first Allie Awards
February 2, 2008
So this is completly not about MY wedding, but I wanted to post about my experience at a wedding industry party.
This is Shari, looking fab, celebrating her newest acquisition - the 2008 Allie Award for best photographer, and chatting with Sabrina Borg from Luxe
After the award show, they had an after party which was held on the stage of the theatre. There were all kinds of crazy props floating around, and with a bunch of artists breaking loose, you know there were some crazy times. Here we are celebrating Shari's victory!
As we were leaving, we snuck into the top part of the theatre to get a different perspective.
I had such a great time and was totally excited to be invited and recognized at the Allies.
Here's to many more victories and celebrating such an awesome photographer!!!!
So this is completly not about MY wedding, but I wanted to post about my experience at a wedding industry party.
Shari invited me (and paid for my ticket) to go to the 2008 Allie awards that was held at the Cobb Energy Center. The Allie Awards are kind of like the Oscars for the Atlanta Wedding Industry. Shari and her boyfriend Stephen, her mom Bea and I dressed up and headed to the Awards show in hopes of returning with a victory.....AND WE DID!!!!! Shari entered John and Anna's wedding from Barnsley Gardens that I helped shoot. She was awarded best photographer of 2008!!! WOO HOO!!! Congrats to Shari and our team!

Yeah.....I had WAY too much of a good time. This was after I had danced for about 2 hours straight.
Hamming it up and striking a pose.
I was ready for my close up and loved being on stage again....
As you can see, this theatre is massive, I couldn't believe how big this place was. It must be awesome to see shows there.

The Wimbish House
January 24, 2008
It's a historic mansion nestled in between a very tall and large corporate building and a parking lot. Very odd location, but beautiful house with awesome architecture.
The house seems a bit out of sorts, located next to a huge office building in the middle of a city. It has about 10 feet of front yard and no place to really pull into for drop offs.
So basically the most glaring problem with the Wimbish House is parking, and although you could "rent out" the parking lot next door and down the street, I honestly did NOT want my guests walking across Peachtree Street to get to the reception. In the end that was the only reason we did not choose the Wimbish House.
When you first cross the very southern looking verandah style porch of the house, it's only a hint of the grandiose measure of what's to come.
Once inside the house, you are greeted with multiple mingling rooms, all hardwood floors, beautiful archways and a victorian decor. There is a grand staircase that winds down from the floor above that is always a favorite for the Bride and Groom's grand entrance.
The main floor is where cocktail hour is held.
When it is time for the reception to begin, guests pass through the hallway decorated with the history of portraits of previous women's club presidents. Guests then walk downstairs into the ballroom.
The ballroom is one large room that has fake "glass doors" that are tinted with a reflective mirror looking substance in order to block out the light and block the not so pretty view.
The floors are a blonde hardwood and the walls are painted a faint ecru color and are thus a great blank canvas.
The rental fee of $3,500.00 include tables, chairs (napolean style), set up, break down and security. The best feature is that you are allowed to bring your own alcohol in, though they do have a preferred caterer's list, you can go off list for a $500.00 fee. The event coordiantor, Beth, is very friendly and personable and so easy to work with.
There is also a bride and groom suite upstairs for the bride and groom to sneak off too and have their first meal together without being disturbed. They also have a vendor's room available for your band/DJ or photographer to use for breaks.
The Wimbish house was not available for our June 6th date, but after discussing the parking issues with Al, we both agreed that this was not going to be the place for us.
The search continues....

To Theme or Not to Theme.....
That is the question.
I originally started off with approaching the concept of the themed wedding because my mom bought these elemental fairies as a gift for me, and I really loved them, but also loved the idea of the elements.
So I was originally just using the basic elements, earth - air - fire - water, as a color scheme and decor basis. Which led me to the colors that I really wanted and/or liked.
I loved chocolate, green (any shade), deep russett (orange), gold, copper and navy.
However, I felt like I needed a more cohesive theme and so I parlayed my first choices into what has now become my official theme:
Drumroll please...................
Without further ado I give you:
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Even though the wedding will be in June, I'm going to still consider it Midsummer's and this opened up a veritable floodgate of ideas, colors, decorations, ambiance (maybe even a may pole)....etc.
Once I had this idea in my head, I pretty much ran with it.
I stayed with the original colors (replacing blue w/indigo and shades of deep purple) and since green is Al's favorite color, that will be the main focus for paper products, cake, linens, etc.
I've also opened my eyes to all things sparkly such as chandeliers, hanging crystals, hanging pearls, and white twinkle lights.
So I've started pouring through magazines and websites to find examples of things that I like and want for the reception decor.
Things are progressing nicely.

Magnolia Hall
January 22, 2008
The site is gorgeous and fits PERFECTLY with my Midsummer Night's Dream Theme.
Everything about it is pure gorgeousness. Magnolia Hall is located in Piedmont Park near the Tennis Courts. The floors are a beautiful green marble that meets with a real wooden dance floor at the front of the building. The window drapes are a light green color with a bit of a textured pattern and were very good at blocking out the sunlight. The outside of the building is a grayish-purple stucco looking stone.
The structure of the building is very Frank Lloyd Wright with dark wood, overhead beams and oversized lanterns.
The bathrooms are nice and large, very clean and definitely well thought out.
(Just a random note: I have determined that bathrooms are a variable for me when I'm considering any venue. It's just a thing I notice as a guest/vendor when attending other weddings)
The rental comes with the use of table and chairs (maple CHIVARI chairs - heavenly), set up, break down, a small tent to cover a portion of the outside patio and house a bar, as well as use of the AV equipment.
I AM IN LOVE!!!!
Sorry babe, I'm cheating on you with a venue.
Seriously, I heart this place so much and I can't wait to show Al.
The overall feel is so classy and elegant, while still being very laid back and very "Atlantan".
The only negative things about Magnolia Hall is the fact that you MUST use their bar packages (which are pretty expensive) and you must use a preferred vendor from their list or pay an additional $500.00 to bring in the caterer of your choosing. I can see where this may be an issue when it comes to our budget. I hope not, because I do not want to get my heart broken by this.

Ring Shopping.....Part Uno
Ok, so the next few posts occured in the past, so I'll be dating them as such, even though they will post on various dates...
January 19, 2008
Today was bittersweet actually.
I woke up to a softly falling snow which was beautiful and quite unusual for the Atlanta area.
The morning brought shocking news that one of Al's friends (and mine) had tragically passed away. There was not much detail given, just plans made to go to his funeral that would be held in his hometown of Tennessee.
I had been wanting to get my cello fixed in order to play for a friend's wedding and had previously made an appointment to take my baby to Huthmaker's for a checkup.
Al went with me (I made him drive) and we began the adventure with my new GPS.
After making it to Huthmaker's, dropping off the cello, taking a scenic tour of Lawrencville and striking out three times with my GPS, we stopped at Mellow Mushroom for lunch.
Over lunch, I casually mentioned that I had seen a Shane Co. on the way up, so Al suggested that we stop in and take a look, just to see what's out there.
I was ECSTATIC!
We get to Shane's and I run to the restroom while the saleslady attacks Al.
Unbeknownst to me, Al goes through the showroom and picks out 2 rings that he thinks I'll like (after basic coaching of what I was looking for - halo setting/cushion cut diamond).
So I head into the showroom and start my first journey of looking at engagement rings.
I'm suprised at how quickly my girly side comes out.
Strange what diamonds will do to you.
I found a few, but nothing really stood out to me.
Then I found out, again with the shaft of light and angelic voices.
I swear, I put it on my finger and I was dazzled.
It was perfect.
Christopher Cross design, split shank, pave set diamonds down the side, halo setting, cushion cut 1.4 diamond.....price tag.....approx. $8,439.00.
What's a girl to do with champagne taste on a beer budget you ask?
Sigh heavily and begrudingly take the ring off her hand.
Oh well, if nothing else, I learned what I was looking for, what looks good on me and ballpark prices.
We wrote down all the info. and I went home and poured through the internet trying to find something that would be comparable.
The search continues.....
